World leaders including China and India send congratulations to President Sheikh Mohamed

Those unable to make the journey in person have sent messages

Leaders from around the world, including those from China and India, have sent messages of congratulations to the UAE’s newly elected President, Sheikh Mohamed.

His appointment was announced on Saturday after a meeting of the rulers of the Emirates in Abu Dhabi.

Since then, some of the world’s leaders have started their journeys to the Emirates to congratulate Sheikh Mohamed in person, while others have sent their best wishes from home.

India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi said: “I am confident that under his dynamic and visionary leadership, our Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement will continue to deepen.”

Chinese President Xi Jinping on Sunday sent a congratulatory message to Sheikh Mohamed on his election as President. Mr Xi stands ready “to work with the new president to deepen the comprehensive strategic partnership for the benefit of the two countries and their peoples”, Wam reported.

The UK’s Queen Elizabeth said: “While it is under sorrowful circumstances, I offer my sincere and warmest congratulations on your appointment as President of the United Arab Emirates and Ruler of Abu Dhabi. I look forward to the continuation of the strong and historic bonds between our two countries and peoples.”

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said: “Warmest congratulations to Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed, a close friend of Greece, on his election as President of the UAE.

“I wish him from my heart every success in his new high duties, for the benefit of his country, his people and the region.”

Mohammed bin Salman, Crown Prince, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defence of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, also congratulated Sheikh Mohamed, and the people of the UAE on his election as President of the UAE.

King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa of Bahrain sent his best wishes and expressed sincere congratulations to President Sheikh Mohamed for the precious trust bestowed upon him by the members of the UAE Federal Supreme Council.

Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Crown Prince and Prime Minister of Bahrain sent a congratulatory message to Sheikh Mohamed on his election and wished him success in carrying out his duties, including furthering the UAE’s development and in achieving the aspirations of UAE citizens.

Pakistan’s President Dr Arif Alvi also congratulated Sheikh Mohamed and said: “Pakistan values its fraternal relations with UAE. I hope under his leadership fraternal relations between the two countries will be further strengthened.”

President Muhammadu Buhari of Nigeria, said: “Your predecessor made a mark in the impressive transformation of the UAE, making it a vast business and tourist attraction, building infrastructure, and creating one of the best living standards in the world.

“I’m confident that you are going to build on this great legacy. Nigeria looks forward to greater co-operation with the UAE which has tremendously helped Nigeria.”
